What a sad place the UK has become

I know that this is blog about wildlife and nature but the quality of society is as important to the environment in which we live as is the natural world. This afternoon when I was out shopping something happened which really brought that home to me. A young girl had lost her mother in the local shopping centre and was crying.

As I walked past I quickly asked her if she was OK and she started crying again and said that she had lost her mommy. I was about to suggest that we go to the security guard for them to put a call out but I stopped. Instead I said I’m sure her mother would be back soon. As the girl stepped towards me I turned around and walked away saying to her her mom would be back soon.

Although I walked away and left her alone I did pop into a couple of shops and did a quick shout to find out if anyone had lost a little girl and fortunately I did find the mother.

When I walked away from the girl I did feel guilty but we live in a country where there is a growing barrier between men and children. Only a foolish man now goes to help children he doesn’t know.

Any society that has forced up such a barrier between men and children is extremely sad and really does need to look at the way it views it’s values. Is it really beneficial to put so much suspicion on a man that steps in that it’s better for a 6 year old girl to be left alone crying in distress?

The question has to be how have we got into the situation for this to happen? This really is something quite peculiar to Britain. I’ve travelled a lot but I’ve never come across a society that is as suspicious as Britain is where children are concerned.

Will Britain ever be a place where men are as valued as women where children are concerned and will men ever be able to help children in distress without fear of their actions being misconstrued? I doubt it very much.

Sometimes turning around and walking away leaving a lost crying child to their own devices is the best thing to do.
