Book Review: Pink Boots and A Machete: My Journey from NFL Cheerleader to National Geographic Explorer

Dr Mireya MayorThere’s not many biographies that I get to read that makes me disappointed when it comes to turn the light off but this book is one. It’s a great real-life adventure as possibly one of the most unlikely people becomes an accomplished National Geographic reporter.

Pink Boots and a Machete tells the story of Dr Mireya Mayor, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, who became one of the most well-known primatologist  and reporters on the natural world in recent years.

Mireya takes us through the early stages of her life and how a mommy’s girl and college cheerleader became a field researcher and then reporter in some of the most inhospitable and remote places on Earth. It’s certainly not a book about celebrity hosts reporting on the natural world but about a real scientist reporting on some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet.

The book is fast-paced with lots of quick chapter describing some of the most eventful aspects of her life – including surviving a plane crash. The short punchy chapters fits in well with the story to be told.

Those short chapters seem to carry Dr Mayor’s enthusiasm and passion about the natural world. It is certainly a series of mini-adventures that will keep you entertained. There’s also lots of humour that gets carried across most of the chapters.

It’s a story about overcoming the odds and not just about the close calls with death. It’s how a daughter of an over-protective mother who banned her from the girl scouts because it was too dangerous become someone with a passion of the wilderness and natural world.

I never know if I am going to be tracking gorillas in the Congo, capturing giraffes in Namibia, scaling a mountain in Venezuela, chasing monkeys in Japan, or herding wildebeests from a helicopter. The one thing I can be sure of is that it isn’t ever boring,” she writes.

That same sort of never quite know where you’re heading also comes across well in the book as one chapter after another darts from one adventure to another. One moment you’re reading about her days as a cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins and the next you’re in Africa with its apes.

With the lighter warmer evenings now approaching this is a book to take outside and relax with or some light entertaining reading for your early spring break holiday flights.
