Pentax 8.5×21 Close Focus Papilio Binoculars
Without doubt my favourite binoculars to take with me when I go out on a woodland walk. The magnification is not great so for birdwatching or nature observation out in the open and especially at estuaries and you may find problems. Take them into the woods though and they become a perfect friend.
The special focusing mechanism allows the binoculars to focus quickly to as close as 50cm which is perfect for getting closer looks at moths and insects on the tree trunk and at a turn of the focussing wheel you can be checking out the canopies of the trees for birds.
The binoculars are really easy to use and pretty light so they are not going to wear you out – the binoculars will easily fit in an over-coat pocket. With the 21 mm lens they are really classed as a compact binocular but with the extra close focus technology they are just slightly larger and a little more heavy than your standard compacts.
The images are clear and bright and focusing is smooth. I also like the style and looks of the Pentax Papilio. The binoculars come with a soft case that offers protection against dust and minor scrapes.
When you have these binoculars it is surprising just how quickly time can go. I spent an afternoon once just watching dragonflies at a pond without realising how long I had spent there.
