Over 950 poachers arrested in Tanzania over last 2 months

Tanzanian authorities have announced that an ongoing anti-poaching operation has so far resulted in 952 arrests in less than 2 months. Hundreds of firearms have been seized including high quality military grade weapons. 104 Kg of ivory has also been confiscated.

The Minister for Defense and National Service, Shamsi Vuai Nahodha, explained at today’s press conference that 631 firearms, including 13 military weapons and 1,458 rounds of ammunition have been seized during the operation jointly conducted by the Tanzania People’s Defense Force, Tanzania Police Force and Tanzania National Parks.

Tanzanian officials have boosted their actions again elephant poaching in the country over recent months since a report earlier in the year highlighted that the country could be loosing between 30 and 50 elephants a day to poachers.

The scale of the poaching is reaching a point where it is impacting on the tourism industry in the country.

  1. If I remeber correctly the Tanzanian minister SAID that poachers would be shot on the spot – why continue arresting them? Get to the core of the matter, as once they come out of prison most probably after a short term they’ll be back again! The Jews say – “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” – elephants can’t defend themselves, but we can defend them, which is what many of us are TRYING to do. This news that 952 poachers have been arrested, does not help us!

    • maybe jews had said “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, was it said “an elephant eye for a human eye, an elephant tooth for a human tooth”; with such ideas that’s explain why they have never found peace in their area.
