The ‘King of the Arctic’ has to be the polar bear and on this small ship cruise you will head towards the ice packs as the ice sheets retreat during the summer months. As we cruise around the ice floes we keep our eyes open for the wildlife that can be found here.
At this time of year there is plenty to see in the Arctic, the short summer months makes the region a hive of activity. In the air there’s puffins and geese to see while in the water we watch out for seals, walruses and whales. On land there’s the polar bears, rein-deer and foxes.
Cruising in the Arctic looking for wildlife.
We get the opportunity to head to regions of the Arctic that many of the bigger ships can not venture into and our small landing party sizes - there’s only 53 passengers in total on the ship – means we cause minimum disturbance to the wildlife we come to love and admire.
There’s no set itinerary to this cruise as the wildlife, weather and ice conditions will pretty much dictate where the ship goes but there are a number of regions we hope to call on. These include the ‘the Fjord of Love’, the Monaco Glacier and the ‘14th of July’ glacier.
Small ship Arctic cruise.
Throughout the cruise and the shore trips you will have the benefit of our tour guises who know the natural history of the area extremely well. In addition to the wildlife we also get the chance to take in some of the history of the islands that are here in the Arctic. This includes sites that still show the remnants of a now dead whaling industry and sites which have been the departure points of many attempts to walk to the North Pole.
This cruise that leaves Svalbard, Norway, will open up your eyes to the wealth of life that can be found in this cold but beautiful wilderness. you may even get the chance to see polar bears swimming as they move from ice floe to ice floe on the hunt for seals.
Your tour includes an overnight stay at a hotel in Longyearbyen, Svalbard before the cruise starts.
