It’s the last straw at Jenners as ‘Slurper’ pays a visit!08/09/2018
MCS’ huge straw monster is raising awareness of single-use plastic at Edinburgh’s iconic store, Jenners.
It’s fantastic to welcome Slurper the Straw monster to Scotland for the first time, and where better than iconic Jenners on Edinburghs Princes Street?

We’ve changed last year’s “wet wipe” monster – which highlighted the dangers of flushing wet wipes – into this year’s “straw” monster to help show why the millions of straws that are given away are causing a massive threat to our oceans.
Slurper is on show this weekend at Jenners on Princes Street in Edinburgh.
He’s a bespoke art installation, which inflates into a monster 8m wide x 3.5m tall, covered in a recycled straw waistcoat.
Slurper is taking centre stage in the Grand Hall as the department store works with MCS to promote the message that single-use plastics are an ocean disaster and suggest ways the store’s customers can help reduce the amount of single use plastic they use.
Jenners staff recently carried out a beach clean at Cramond beach to see for themselves the amount of single-use plastic that is washed up or blown onto local beaches. Volunteers from the store picked up over 400 items weighing 9kg between them.
Jenners Store Manager, Alan Thomlinson says: “We are delighted to welcome Slurper to Jenners, he looks fantastic in our Grand Hall and highlights something we are trying to support in store by reducing our use of plastics and reduction in waste along with raising awareness amongst our staff and customers.”
The store has already started to reduce the number of single use items in their cafes, a move supported by MCS.
Catherine Gemmell, MCS Scotland Conservation Officer said: ‘It’s fantastic to welcome Slurper the Straw monster to Scotland for the first time, and where better than iconic Jenners on Edinburghs Princes Street? We hope a lot of people will pop by over the weekend to say “hi” to slurper and find out what they can do to fight plastic either on the beaches next weekend for the Great British Beach Clean or by switching out single use plastics!’
The annual MCS Great British Beach Clean around the Scottish coastline runs between 14th – 17th September. This year’s event is expected to attract the highest number of volunteers in its 25 year history.
