Work begins on Machynys sea defences

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) will start maintenance work on sea defences next week along the Machynys Peninsula in Llanelli that provide protection for over 1700 homes and businesses from flooding.

The work will be carried out on a 4.5km stretch of the defences and will involve cleaning existing sheet piles and adding a protective coating.

The work will strengthen the existing defences, that protect 1746 properties, making sure they keep working effectively for another 20 years.

These sea defences stretch from the Loughor estuary, along the Millennium Coastal Path to the Machynys golf course.

The work will be carried out in a way to protect wildlife like otters, dormice and nesting birds as well as for people who live and work in the area.

It is a designated Special Protection Area (SPA) as well as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), A Ramsar Site and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The work will take around 7 months and the Millennium Coastal Path will remain fully open for people during that time.

Leading on the work, Mandy Richards, Assets and System Management officer for NRW, said:

“Flooding can devastate communities and this work is essential to maintaining the level of flood protection along this stretch of the Llanelli coast.

“This is a long project but one that will reinforce the flood protection of a huge amount of homes and businesses.

“There are no planned path closures and we’ll be working with local organisations, like the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, to make sure we don’t disturb people and wildlife as much as possible.”
