How Natural Flood Management (NFM) Works | WWT02/01/2020
Climate change is likely to mean more frequent and intense flooding for the UK. Traditional ‘hard’ flood defences – putting up barriers to literally stop the water – can no longer cope alone. They’re also not positively impacting the natural world, so adding more of these systems is problematic. So what else can we do?
Natural flood management, or NFM, works with our landscapes to ‘slow the flow’ of water into our rivers and drains through natural water features – wetlands. One such project is run by WWT’s Carina Gaertner with the Environment Agency, in the Donniford and Monksilver river catchment (Two Valleys project).
