Rewriting Scales of Silence: Making a Strong Story Even Stronger

scales of silence

When I sat down to write Scales of Silence, I had no idea it would become the first book in the Gareth Rhys Investigates series. Like many first novels, it was a learning experience. I poured everything I had into it, from the mystery itself to the environmental themes that have become a hallmark of the series. It introduced readers to Gareth Rhys and opened the door to a world of eco-crime, wildlife trafficking, corruption, and murder across South Wales.

Over the weeks, hundreds of readers have downloaded, purchased, and enjoyed the book. Many have gone on to read the rest of the series, and I remain incredibly grateful for every review, message, and recommendation that has helped the books reach a wider audience.

One of the advantages of being an independent author is that the conversation with readers never really ends. Unlike a traditionally printed book that remains fixed forever, an ebook can continue to evolve. It can be refined, improved, and updated based on constructive reader feedback.

That is exactly what has happened with Scales of Silence.

Why Rewrite a Published Novel?

Over the past couple of weeks , a number of readers have contacted me with thoughtful feedback about the book. The comments were not about the central mystery or the overall plot. In fact, most readers enjoyed the story itself and the wildlife crime investigation at its heart.

Instead, the feedback focused on something more subtle.

Several readers felt that the novel did not always flow as smoothly as it could. Some scenes moved a little too quickly. Certain transitions between locations and investigations felt abrupt. A few readers wanted more time with Gareth himself and wanted deeper characterisation from some of the supporting cast.

To be honest, I agreed.

After all, Scales of Silence was my first novel. Since writing it, I have completed multiple books in the Gareth Rhys series and learned an enormous amount about pacing, scene structure, atmosphere, character development, and storytelling.

Looking back at my debut novel, I could see opportunities to strengthen it without changing the story readers already know.

What’s Changed?

The good news is that the core novel remains exactly the same.

The wildlife trafficking investigation is unchanged.

The murders are unchanged.

The mystery remains unchanged.

The twists, revelations, and ultimate outcome are all exactly as readers remember them.

What has changed is how the story is delivered.

The rewrite focuses heavily on three key areas:

Characterisation

One of the biggest improvements is the development of character.

Gareth Rhys now has more room to breathe on the page. Readers spend more time inside his thoughts and reactions as he navigates the increasingly dangerous investigation.

Supporting characters have also been expanded. Relationships feel more natural, motivations are clearer, and conversations have greater depth. This allows the emotional stakes of the story to land more effectively and creates a stronger connection between the reader and the people involved in the mystery.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere is something I have become increasingly passionate about as the series has developed.

South Wales provides an incredible backdrop for crime fiction, from its forests and hills to its coastline, industrial heritage, ports, and hidden corners.

In the original version of Scales of Silence, some locations appeared briefly before the story moved rapidly onwards. In the new edition, these settings have been expanded and enriched.

Readers will spend more time experiencing the environments Gareth moves through. The ports, roads, countryside, and crime scenes all have greater presence, helping to create a stronger sense of place and immersion.

Scene Transitions and Flow

Perhaps the biggest change of all is the way the story flows.

Many of the reader comments centred around pacing and transitions between scenes. While the original version moved quickly, there were occasions where the movement from one scene to another felt abrupt.

The rewrite smooths those transitions considerably.

Additional scenes, connective passages, and expanded character moments create a more natural progression through the investigation. Events now build upon one another more effectively, allowing tension to rise steadily throughout the novel.

The result is a reading experience that feels more cohesive and immersive while maintaining the fast pace expected from a thriller.

From 57,000 Words to 66,000 Words

One of the most obvious changes is the increase in length.

The original novel came in at approximately 57,000 words.

The revised edition now sits at around 66,000 words.

That may sound like a significant increase, but the additional 9,000 words have not been added simply to make the book longer.

Every new scene, description, and piece of dialogue exists to strengthen the story. The goal was never to pad the novel. The goal was to improve the reading experience.

Those additional words provide space for richer character development, stronger atmosphere, and smoother storytelling.

Importantly, the book still remains a highly accessible thriller.

At around 66,000 words, most readers can comfortably finish it in approximately six to seven hours. That means it remains ideal for a relaxing weekend read.

Whether you’re sitting in the garden enjoying the sunshine, relaxing on a beach holiday, or curling up with a coffee on a rainy afternoon, Scales of Silence remains the kind of thriller that can easily be completed over one weekend.

In fact, many readers will comfortably finish it across two reading sessions.

The Benefits of Digital Publishing

One of the things I love about ebooks is their flexibility.

Traditional publishing often locks a book into a permanent state. Once thousands of printed copies are produced, changes become difficult and expensive.

Ebooks offer a different opportunity.

Authors can listen to readers, identify areas for improvement, and release updated editions that provide a better experience for future readers.

That doesn’t mean changing stories every few months or constantly rewriting books. It means taking genuine feedback seriously and being willing to improve where improvements can be made.

I have always believed that constructive criticism is valuable. Nobody writes a perfect book, especially not a first novel.

The feedback I received about Scales of Silence was thoughtful, fair, and ultimately very helpful. Rather than ignoring it, I decided to use it as an opportunity to make the book stronger.

I hope readers will notice the difference.

Already Own the Kindle Version?

If you have already purchased or downloaded Scales of Silence on Kindle, you’ll be pleased to know that you should be able to receive the updated version.

Once Amazon has processed and distributed the revised edition across its systems, you can update your copy by synchronising your Kindle library.

To do this, simply open your Kindle settings and use the Sync option. This will synchronise your Kindle library with the latest versions stored on Amazon’s servers.

Please don’t do this immediately, however.

The updated files need time to work their way through Amazon’s systems before they become available to all customers.

At the time of writing, I expect everything to be fully updated and ready for synchronisation by around 4th June.

If you sync before then, you may simply receive the existing version rather than the revised edition.

Thank You

Finally, I want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who has read Scales of Silence over the the last month. Since it’s launch at the end of April there has been 269 downloads of the book and over 4,000 pages read on Kindle Unlimited.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to leave a review or contacted me directly.

Thank you to everyone who has recommended the Gareth Rhys series to friends, family, and fellow thriller readers.

Most importantly, thank you to those readers who were willing to provide constructive feedback.

Writing can sometimes feel like a solitary process, but books ultimately belong to the readers who spend their time with them. Your comments and observations help me grow as an author and help make future books stronger.

I genuinely believe this revised edition of Scales of Silence is a better novel than the version first released. It tells the same story, follows the same investigation, and delivers the same mystery, but it does so with greater depth, stronger atmosphere, smoother pacing, and more developed characters.

If you’ve never read Scales of Silence, there has never been a better time to discover where Gareth Rhys’s journey began.

And if you’ve already read it, I hope you’ll enjoy revisiting the story in its new and improved form.

Happy reading.
